Many strategic roads lead through the Ilirska Bistrica region. From the Adriatic Sea to the Alps, from Italy to Central Europe, from the North Sea to the Balkans – these places have seen peoples and armies roll by for millennia. The desire to control the roads and the movements compelled people to build fortresses, castles and guard towers that later evolved into mansions and palaces. The richness of the forests and nature became the foundation for a flourishing economy, and its conspicuous riches are still reflected in the imposing architectural monuments of all ages, both religious and secular.
The Prem Castle rules the Reka Valley, and the remaining tower of the Kalec Castle still holds the whispers of composer Miroslav Vilhar and the Slovene national movement of the 19th century. The walls of the Gotnik Castle are as mysterious as ever with frescoes in the Church of St Peter painted by master Kralj. What is more, the mausoleum was designed by master Plečnik himself. Chapels and churches frame the natural beauty of the region and the ruins of the Church of St Agathius still guard a magical spring. The only church in Slovenia dedicated to St Joachim is found near Ilirska Bistrica.
