Ilirska Bistrica means mighty forests and Mount Snežnik, vast Karst meadows with views stretching all the way to the sea and the Alps, and the Brkini Hills, dressed in the colours of blossoming trees in spring and filled with fruit in autumn. Ilirska Bistrica means crystal-clear springs, streams, rivers, and lakes. A network of CYCLING and HIKING trails takes us to everything created by the people who have lived here: the medieval Prem Castle, the forest estates of Mašun and Sviščaki, churches decorated with murals by Tone Kralj, and other cultural monuments. During the carnival season, these paths also lead us to villages where spring is awakened by the sound of bells and the clattering of the wooden clappers carried by the Škoromati.

The year 2026 will mark the 150th anniversary of the births of two great figures of Slovenian Modernism.
Cankar and Kette Year 2026 will be marked by a rich and diverse programme running throughout the year, with new events and activities being added and developed along the way.
To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Dragotin Kette, who was born in Prem, the Municipality of Ilirska Bistrica honoured the poet by publishing a facsimile edition of his Poezije (Poems). The edition is a facsimile of the second supplementary and comprehensive edition from 1907. The book was edited by Anton Aškerc and illustrated by Maksim Gaspari.
Kette’s heritage is of great value to the Municipality of Ilirska Bistrica. A memorial room dedicated to the poet has been arranged in the old school in Prem since 1968. In 2006, the Kette Trail between Ilirska Bistrica and Prem was opened, and it was renovated last year. Several memorials in the municipality also bear Kette’s name. ILIRSKA BISTRICA MUNICIPALITY
