The lodge lies on the edge of a forest clearing at the foot of Mount Snežnik, near the tourist and recreational center with a small ski resort and a holiday home settlement. After World War II, PD Ilirska Bistrica took over the barn next to a crumbling mountain lodge to thoroughly repair and furnish it. At the opening on 12 August 1951, they named it Cankar’s Hut. After 1963, the hut was enlarged and remade into a beautiful mountain lodge, which opened on 21 July 1968.

The lodge is open form Wednesday to Sunday. The restaurant with a bar sits 38 people, with an additional 80 to 100 seats available at the tables in front of the building.
