The undisputed hiking hotspots are Mount Snežnik and its massif. Starting at the hamlet of Sviščaki, the trails go up to the botanic reserve and the Drago Karolin mountain hut, leading to secluded places around the summit. From the guesthouse in the middle of the Mašun Plateau, the trails crisscross the forests and the scent of old spruces fill your lungs. One of the hiking trails above Ilirska Bistrica is called The Little Heart's Path (Srčkova pot in Slovene), and rightfully so. A nice mountain hut on the hill of Kozlek welcomes you with refreshments for your body and your soul alike. And the Poet's Path goes from Trnovo to the medieval Prem Castle, where most of the trails over Brkini start.
