The center of Ilirska Bistrica, which was beautifully named after the Illyrian provinces established by Napoleon himself, reflects a rich history of a town built literally on water. Karstic springs and extensive forests promoted the development of numerous sawmills and a flourishing timber trade. Prosperity was accentuated by numerous imposing houses built over tamed streams. Ilirska Bistrica was a rich town, and townhouses and palaces still tell stories about the times of industrious people, rich merchants and nobility.

A pleasant stroll takes you back in time, with a quick detour leading to the wondrous Sušec waterfall, and you can stop for refreshments at one of the cozy squares.
